07/12/2001 Entry: "ICQ 2001 Alpha"
Shhhhh!
The latest on USENET is that ICQ has posted their ICQ 2001 Alpha installer on their website, no doubt for testing. You can access it via the ICQ 2001a Beta Install Page.
Below, some features:
The first feature I noticed is that the installation is very different. You have a choice between an ActiveX-based installer, or a "classic" installer. The classic installer works much in the same way that Netscape 6 / Mozilla installs (a small initial download, and the installer retrives the files it requires from the internet).
Another feature, is that my contact list was automatically uploaded to the ICQ servers. I haven't had a chance to test this out yet -- but I'm sure it works great. I think I'll back up my contact list, and fresh-reinstall ICQ 2001 and see if it retrieves my contact list.
Actually -- I'll just boot into Windows XP, and clean-install :)
Check it out, before ICQ removes this link...
