01/12/2002 Entry: "Mobile Internet (Sort Of)"
I have reached the pinacle of geekdom this time for sure -- I am writing this entry from my Palm Pilot, which is nothing new...but I am on the Internet... Live. It's amazing. You see, there's this Windows application called Mocha W32 PPP, which acts as a gateway for the serial port (which the Palm is connected to) and my PC's Internet connection.
Of course, that is only half the story. The Palm also needs a gateway, much like WAP-enabled phones do, in order to filter out some tags, and deliver content to me in an ultra-compressed form. The Palm has only so much storage, don'tcha know. This is where AvantGo comes in. Previously thought to only deliver offline pages, with my MochaPPP I have a live connection, as long as I have a serial connection.
Imagine... when BlueTooth-enabled Palms become available, and my PC has a NIC which is BlueTooth-Enabled, doing the same thing, at less than half the power consumption, and wirelessly! Amazing technology!!
Now, if only Palm had a more rapid means to input data... 30wpm (the speed a good Graffitist can write up to) is just not fast enough.
