08/23/2004 Entry: "Megaman Anniversary Collection Gripes"

What's with these people?

They combine 10 great mega man games onto on DVD-ROM, it's great! It's complete, and I can play all these games from one disc.
But the worst thing to ever happen to Console gaming is the ability to code in an emulator, and have the system play the original games, graphics and all.

Read on for more gripes.

I give the GENESIS Megaman Collection game a high score than these types of games -- at least the graphics and sound were given a 16bit upgrade, and made me felt that the designers put WORK into the software and gave it a really great new feel.

Same with Mario. What's wrong Nintendo? You did a GREAT job with the Mario collection (1, 2, 3, and Mario World if you got the good cartridge, along with the Japanese Mario 2). The graphics and sound were updated beautifully.

But now, why on earth would anyone buy the Mario One for GBA?! Sure, the in-game sound effects that were added are great, but ... why not spiff it up a bit? I already have this game -- on gameboy colour, and I give that game a higher score than this emulated junk.

And ZELDA. You'd think you could at least give the graphics a bit of an upgrade, what with a 512k game put onto a 2.whatever Gigabyte gamecube disc.
Good job with the Zelda Ocarina of Time resolution and refresh rate upgrade -- I really like that. But why couldn't you do something for the NES classics? I'd LOVE to play Zelda 2 with spiffy paralax scrolling backgrounds and maybe some awesome fire effects.

In conclusion: EMULATION ON RETAIL GAMES sucks. Leave emulation to the illegal rings -- create a new piece of art with your retail games.

I hope this page is googled. Leave comments if you care.

I wanted to comment --
Nintendo DID make a good move, with their Metroid Zero Mission - a remake of the original NES Metroid, but with updated graphics, sound, new areas to explore, and even a new ending. Okay, wait, it's not a remake, it's *based* on the old game.

But then there's Mario Vs Donkey Kong -- there was already a game like this for GB Color (or was it gameboy, with supergameboy extensions?) but the GBA version adds a lot more.

Just give us a 32bit upgrade to the originals... ESPECIALLY megaman. The genesis version stops at Megaman 3, so that's not so entirely fun -- but the classics ARE really good still.
