Birdwatching IN NORWAY

The White-backed Woodpecker. The woodlands along the Hardangerfjord provide good breeding habitat.

Hordaland county is a part of "Vestlandet" - The Western Land. Two thirds of the county's population live in Bergen, Norway's second largest city. The long Hardanger Fjord in the south and numerous islands along the coast are main landscape features in this county. Hordaland means "the land of the Hordar", a tribe with a name of possibly Celtic origin. For many, Hordaland is the gateway to Norway, with many visitors from Europe arriving by ferry via Bergen. The county offers some good birding with the Hardangervidda (press the Eidfjord Button) being internationally known as a top ornithological site of interest. However the county has more to offer. Sea Watching from the island of Sotra during May can produce all four species of Diver, or if the timing is right thousands of Barnacle Geese or Brent Geese heading to their northern breeding grounds. Below you will find some of the latest observations from the county.
